Capacitors Temperature Codes and Characteristics

Very often you will see a three digit code next to the capacitance value and voltage for a capacitor. That three digit code can help you understand the temperature characteristics for that capacitor.

Some of the most common codes are:
X7R (minimum temp is -55°C; maximum temp is +125°C; value change over temperature is ±15%)
Y5V (minimum temp is -30°C; maximum temp is +85°C; value change over temperature is -82%, +22%)
Z5U (minimum temp is +10°C; maximum temp is +85°C; value change over temperature is -56%, +22%)

Use the chart below to find the temperature characteristics for your capacitor.

Temperature Characteristic Code
Minimum Temperature Maximum Temperature Value Change over Temperature
X -55oC 2 +45oC A ± 1%
Y -30oC 4 +65oC B ± 1.5%
Z +10oC 5 +85oC C ± 2.2%
- - 6 +105oC D ± 3.3%
- - 7 +125oC E ± 4.7%
- - - - F ± 7.5%
- - - - P ± 10%
- - - - R ± 15%
- - - - S ± 22%
- - - - T - 33%, + 22%
- - - - U - 56%, + 22%
- - - - V - 82%, + 22%
