A heat sink is a general component of an electrical circuit used for the dissipation of heat generated when the circuit is active. Electronic components are particularly susceptible to heat and are damaged if the internal heat generated is not removed immediately. This makes heat sinks an essential part in an electronic gadget such as a computer.
Components like CPU, graphic cards, etc. have built-in heat sinks for the dissipation of heat. A heat sink is usually made of aluminum or copper, both metals conducting heat extremely well. The heat sink absorbs the heat from component such as ICs and CPU and dissipates the heat through radiation to the surrounding air. Present-day CPUs and other heat generating components come with heat sinks with built-in miniature fans. Plastic or metal clips, which form a part of the mounting kit, hold the entire arrangement together.
